Produced: THE DEADLY ANTIDOTE dealing with Karen Carpenter's killer - Ipecac abuse; and THE FORGOTTEN VETERANS dealing with female Agent Orange victims. Ipecac series was nominated for a national Emmy. The Agent Orange series lead to Congress forcing the CDC to expand research to include women.
Working for the great Investigative Reporter, Steve Wilson, I was given the opportunity to work on medical related issues. Our investigation into the death of Karen Carpenter was the to make public the link to a misuse of Ipecac.
The clue that lead to this revelation was a single half page note in the L.A. County Medical Examiner's final report on Karen's death - stuck about two-thirds of the way through a 300-page document file. Working backwards to the Pennsylvania lab which did the test and
identified ipecac in a liver sample, and the doctor who had the first documented death of a
patient from misuse of the vomit inducing chemical. Our series of reports lead to FDA pressure
on all companies manufacturing the medication. That resulted in ALL makers adding a warning
to their label.
